Silkscape, a partnership with City Arts Nottingham, was a major textile project that featured as part of the Festival’s programme. As with all performances, visual art and moving image at the event, Silkscape responded to the theme of ‘celebrating freedom & democracy through the arts’.
In June, Ali led the participants on an evening walk around Leicester in areas that reflect the diversity of communities within the city, searching for inspiration on the theme of ‘freedom’. In July, she introduced the participants to the skills and techniques needed to create vibrant and illustrative work for the 40 metre silk.
Using designs created in workshops, inspired by a walk around sites of the city celebrating freedom and democracy, 30 metres of silk was waxed during workshops at Embrace Arts on Saturday 16 August. On Sunday, Leicester’s City Centre played host to the live painting of the silk throughout the day.
