In 2012 we completed our five year project Imagination Our Nation by producing a film of Chaz’s A to Z – A project working in nine London schools with A New Direction to explore the many worlds that young people inhabit in the city, and to encourage them to welcome the world to London in their own way. We used puppetry and film as a tool for building a narrative through the project, and have produced a short film.
Chaz also finished her journey in the UK by leading the torch Relay carnival parade for Hackney on 21 July 2012.
Imagination Our Nation (ION) was a five-year national project engaging young people and their communities across the UK. Participants were asked to imagine the future they wanted to create. Their dreams were turned into reality using the arts as a tool for social change, as the project culminated in five themed events in 2012.
ION launched in 2008 as a creative response to the core Olympic and Paralympic Values of Welcoming The World, Inspiring Young People and Leaving a Legacy and was been granted the London 2012 Inspire mark as part of the Cultural Olympiad.
Each year had a different theme:
Sowing the seeds for the future during the first year of the project. A London 2012 Inspire Mark project, Germination created the project. Kinetika worked with partners from 6 regions creating 14 performances involving 3,500 participants.
Champions are born and wake up to a world of opportunities – engaging communities to discover their challenge. Also granted the London 2012 Inspire Mark. Fascination was launched in 2009 with the creation of 17 small puppets that will explore the world of many possibilities. There are now 23 partners creating and taking part in 57 events across the UK, involving over 8000 participants and reaching an audience of almost 2 million.
The Champions embark on their journey- finding a solution to their challenge.
Teams of Champions work together to find solutions and create a gift.
12 Champions, 1 from each region and nation in the UK lead a procession to East London for the collective sharing of the vision for the future. This finale culminates in a gathering of the regions and nations in a national celebration of our “Future Champions” and all of our communities.
